What is nasopharyngeal carcinoma?

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a malignant tumor that occurs in the roof and lateral walls of the nasopharyngeal cavity. It shows marked geographic clustering and ethnic susceptibility and is more common in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and southern China.

Main types of nasopharyngeal carcinoma

1.Keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma
Associated with smoking and alcohol consumption; more common in low-incidence regions and accounts for a smaller proportion of cases.

2.Non-keratinizing carcinoma
Closely associated with EBV infection and accounts for more than 90% of cases in high-incidence regions in China.

3.Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma
Relatively rare and characterized by distinctive histopathological features.

Etiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma

1.EBV infection: The most important etiologic factor, closely related to the initiation and progression of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

2.Genetic factors: Marked familial aggregation and ethnic susceptibility.

3.Environmental factors: Nitrosamine compounds in preserved foods.

4.Lifestyle factors: Unhealthy habits such as smoking and alcohol consumption.

5.Geographic factors: Southern China and Southeast Asia are high-incidence regions.

Conclusion

Jinshazhou Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine emphasizes the importance of early prevention and control of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Strengthening screening, improving diagnostic yield, standardizing radiotherapy, and advancing individualized multimodal treatment can substantially improve outcomes and patients’ quality of life.
