What is a Brachytherapy Afterloader?
The GammaMedplus™ iX, introduced at our hospital, is the latest fifth-generation product of the American company Varian, specifically designed for three-dimensional conformal high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy. Brachytherapy, also called close-range radiotherapy, internal irradiation, or sealed-source radiotherapy, can be performed as a standalone treatment or in combination with other therapies such as surgery, external beam radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, achieving a complementary effect. It utilizes natural body cavities (e.g., the vagina) or interstitial implantation to introduce the radioactive source into the body for precise direct irradiation of the tumor, which not only better improves patient quality of life and survival, but also effectively reduces local recurrence rates and prolongs patient survival.
Intracavitary treatment: lung cancer, esophageal cancer, rectal cancer, cervical cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Interstitial implantation treatment: superficial solid tumors, bone tumors, breast cancer, prostate cancer, tongue cancer
Intraoperative or postoperative implantation treatment: cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, abdominal masses
Surface applicator treatment: skin cancer, oral cancer
1. Uses high-activity radioactive sources to deliver high-dose-rate irradiation to local tumors.
2. Short treatment duration, suitable for outpatient therapy.
3. High safety profile, effectively reducing side effects and complications, and lowering local recurrence rates.
4. Highly automated, with flexible intrauterine and vaginal applicators, suitable for various tumor types and anatomical differences.
5. Personalized treatment protocols, achieving optimal therapeutic outcomes while controlling the dose to adjacent organs.
