1. The Darkest Moment: When Eating Became a Form of Torment
For this 51-year-old patient, the cruelest part of the spring of 2026 was not the word “cancer” itself, but the helplessness of watching himself struggle to swallow even a sip of water or a single grain of rice.

Since November 2024, the patient had noticed enlarged lymph nodes on the left side of his neck. In February 2025, he developed intermittent blood-stained nasal discharge and blood in the sputum, which gradually worsened. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the left cervical lymph node was performed at a local hospital, confirming nasopharyngeal carcinoma and metastatic undifferentiated carcinoma of the left cervical lymph node. However, after the diagnosis, he refused the recommended treatment. In March 2026, his condition deteriorated sharply. The visible hard mass on his neck continued to enlarge, and his neck circumference once reached 42 cm, leaving his neck so stiff that he could barely turn it. What was even more distressing was the “butterfly effect” that followed: fullness in the left ear, a sudden decline in hearing, and unilateral nasal obstruction. Yet what most deeply shook his will to fight was the extreme sensation of obstruction when swallowing — every bite felt as if it were caught on the edge of a blade. His appetite dropped to its lowest point; hunger caused by difficulty eating, together with anxiety that haunted him day and night, led to a dramatic loss of weight, leaving him increasingly gaunt and weakened.
2. Turning the Tide: An Individualized Multimodal Treatment Strategy
On March 16, 2026, with nowhere else to turn, he was admitted to our hospital holding on to his last hope. Following a comprehensive evaluation, our multidisciplinary team determined that the patient had Stage IVB nasopharyngeal carcinoma (cT3N3M1) with extensive metastases to the cervical region, lungs, liver, bones, and lymph nodes. Given the high tumor burden, rapid disease progression, and severe physical decline caused by prolonged illness, conventional single-modality treatment was unlikely to achieve both satisfactory efficacy and acceptable tolerability. The MDT promptly formulated an individualized comprehensive treatment strategy based on the principle of "precise local tumor reduction combined + systemic disease control," implementing treatment in a staged and targeted manner.
The first step focused on the dominant metastatic lesion in the liver, where minimally invasive interventional arterial infusion therapy was performed. By delivering a high concentration of anticancer agents directly through the artery supplying the tumor, the drugs were precisely targeted to the core of the lesion, enabling efficient tumor reduction. Compared with conventional systemic administration, this approach maximizes local therapeutic efficacy while minimizing systemic toxicity and reducing the burden on the patient's weakened condition. At the same time, it helps preserve both physical function and immune reserve while effectively controlling tumor growth.
Building upon precise local tumor reduction, the team combined low-dose chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and green thermotherapy to establish a multidimensional, multimodal antitumor strategy. Meanwhile, specialists from the Department of Clinical Nutrition developed an individualized nutritional plan to strengthen the patient's overall physical condition. Chemotherapy targeted microscopic metastatic disease throughout the body, immunotherapy helped restore the body's own antitumor immune response, and thermotherapy enhanced treatment sensitivity and therapeutic efficacy. Working together with continuous nutritional support, these complementary treatment modalities acted synergistically to target residual cancer cells throughout the body and suppress further tumor progression and dissemination.

During treatment, the medical team closely monitored even the slightest changes in the patient's condition around the clock, dynamically adjusting the treatment regimen to ensure that every therapeutic intervention was delivered with precision, accuracy, and maximum effectiveness.。
3. A Turning Point: From 42 cm to 36 cm — The New Beginning Behind the Numbers
After more than a month of systematic and standardized treatment, gradual changes began to emerge through meticulous day-by-day care.

The cervical lesion shrank significantly, and the patient's neck circumference decreased from an alarming 42 cm to a normal 36 cm. The once rock-hard protruding mass became noticeably softer and smaller, his neck gradually regained its normal range of motion, and the constant tightness and stiffness that had troubled him day and night became a thing of the past.

Even more encouraging than the numbers was the transformation in his daily life. By the time he was discharged, he was already able to tolerate a liquid diet without difficulty. At his follow-up visit in late June, the sensation of obstruction when swallowing had disappeared completely. From cautiously taking his first spoonful of porridge to comfortably finishing an entire bowl of rice, his appetite had fully returned. Smiling, he told us, "I never realized that simply being able to swallow a sip of water could feel so wonderful."。”
4. A 2-kg Weight Gain: Every Kilogram Represented Renewed Confidence
As his ability to eat was restored, his physical condition gradually entered a positive cycle of recovery. At this stage, he had gained 2 kg steadily. The persistent fatigue and listlessness that had once weighed him down improved markedly. His complexion became healthier, his voice grew stronger, and he seemed to have regained his energy. From being emaciated and weakened to walking with confidence once again, those 2 kilograms represented far more than muscle and body weight—they symbolized his renewed confidence, strength, and hope for life.

From struggling to swallow and living with a stiff, immobile neck to eating normally again and regaining his vitality; from the darkest days of physical and emotional exhaustion to the smiles and conversations that now fill his daily life: every step of this patient's recovery stands as compelling evidence of the value of individualized comprehensive cancer care.
A Warm Reminder: Many patients hesitate after receiving an early cancer diagnosis and delay standard treatment because of fear or uncertainty. Repeated delays often make treatment more difficult and increase both physical and emotional suffering. The most effective strategy against cancer is always early detection and early treatment. Even if the disease has already progressed to an advanced stage, it is important not to lose hope. With an individualized precision treatment plan developed by a multidisciplinary team, it is still possible to effectively reduce tumor burden, relieve a wide range of symptoms, and help patients regain a high quality of daily life.
